Amy Fourney, M.A.
Resident Therapist
Born and raised in Northern Virginia, Amy Fourney (she/her) has worked with a diverse range of clients coping with challenges such as anxiety, depression, gender identity issues, life transition, family relationships.
After receiving her undergraduate degree in sociology from James Madison University, Amy earned a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from The George Washington University. During that time, she counseled clients at GW’s Community Counseling Services Center and The Women’s Center in Vienna, Virginia, a nonprofit community program for families dealing with domestic violence and other issues. She also completed suicide prevention training and worked with the CrisisLink Suicide Hotline.
Amy’s work with young people has shaped her commitment to building resilience among this underserved population. After graduate school, Amy started her residency at a private practice in Falls Church, Virginia, working with teens and emerging adults. As an undergraduate intern, she provided support for the outpatient behavioral health program for adolescents and young adults at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
By providing a relaxed, safe space for people from all backgrounds, Amy helps her clients find the self-care approach that works for them. Working from a framework of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, she helps them regain control of their experiences through mindfulness and behavior modification. Amy also is trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and draws on interventions used in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and the principles of Attachment Theory to create a toolbox for understanding relationships, grounding emotions, and coping in times of crisis.
Amy is passionate about working with teens and families during this tumultuous time when access to youth mental health services is scarce. By addressing important family relationships, she aims to help teens break through survival mode so they can build the skills and confidence they need to tolerate life’s pain and focus on what brings them joy.
